MIDWIFERY UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

General Information

 

Tokat School of Health, which was established with the Decision of the Council of Ministers No. 96/8655 published in the Official Gazette dated November 2, 1996 and numbered 22805, actually started its activities in the 1997-1998 academic year. On April 8, 2016, our school was closed with the decision of the Council of Ministers numbered 2016/8562 and turned into the "Faculty of Health Sciences".

TOGU Faculty of Health Sciences Midwifery Department is a 4-year (8 semesters) undergraduate program. In the Midwifery Department , theoretical and practical courses are given within the framework of the midwifery undergraduate program within the scope of the regulation on the determination of the minimum education conditions for seven professions, namely Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Midwifery and Architecture, and EUÇEP on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications and ensuring free movement in Europe.


In the education process, courses are given to get to know the environment and society, to use new technologies, and basic medical courses covering the structure, anatomy and physiology of human beings. In addition to vocational courses for professionalism, the program offers courses for the competence of conducting and understanding scientific research.

 

 Graduates of the Department of Midwifery are awarded a "Midwifery Bachelor's Degree". Our graduates use the title of "Midwife" by the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education in accordance with the Law No. 2547. Our department has started the Midwifery Master's program since 2014 and the Midwifery Doctorate program since the fall semester of 2020. He is currently Under the Head of the Department of Professor Dr. Özgür ALPARSLAN, there are 1 Professor, 1 Associate Professor, 8 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer and 4 Research Assistants.

Purpose of the Program:

The aim of this program is;

  • Able to increase midwifery knowledge and skills with leadership qualities in professionalism,
  • Able to approach the women and society they serve holistically;
  • Able to plan, implement and evaluate midwifery services that protect, increase and improve maternal, newborn, family and community health in pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth and postpartum periods by adopting the concepts, theories, methods and principles of midwifery;
  • Again, able to carry out family planning services in line with the needs of individuals; able to fulfill their roles and responsibilities as an effective and effective member of the multidisciplinary health team;
  • Able to take part in midwifery education, management and research; To train professional midwives who take into account national and international professional ethical principles while fulfilling all these.

Program Application, Registrations and Transfer Student Admission

Those who achieve numerical success with the national exam opened by the Higher Education Institution are placed in the Midwifery Undergraduate Program.

During midwifery undergraduate education; In accordance with the midwifery undergraduate curriculum developed within the scope of harmonization with the European Union, the criteria that the student must complete before graduation (Official Gazette Date: 02.02.2008 Official Gazette Number: 26775; Doctor, Nursing, Midwifery, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmacy and Architecture Education Programs (Regulation on the Determination of Minimum Education Conditions).  For the admission conditions to the proposed program, the reasons of Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Graduate Education Institute Graduate Education Regulation are taken into consideration.

Recognition of the Previous Program

The recognition of learning in Turkish Higher Education Institutions is carried out within the scope of the "Regulation on the Principles of Transition Between Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer".

Goal of the Program

During midwifery education, midwifery students;

 

  • To be able to provide holistic care to women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum processes,
  • To be able to comprehend the importance of maternal health,
  • Able to protect, maintain and improve the physical, psychological and social health of the mother and newborn from the mother's womb,
  • Able to encourage and enable mothers and their families to take responsibility for their own health services,
  • Adopting the basic concepts, theories, principles and methods in midwifery,
  • Able to transform the health practices they have learned into behavior in their own lives,
  • Able to diagnose risky situations and deviations from health that may occur in pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, birth and postpartum processes, take the necessary precautions and foresee referral when necessary,
  • Able to use education, care and counseling techniques to protect, maintain and restore health in the society,
  • To be able to provide family planning services and counseling to spouses in order to increase the health of the society in general and the family, mother and child in particular,
  • Able to see the problems in midwifery services, plan, execute and evaluate the appropriate services for the solution; Able to use communication skills well with the awareness of their professional roles and responsibilities related to these,
  • It is aimed to gain knowledge and skills that can cooperate with other disciplines in midwifery education, management and research.

 

Graduation Requirements

Midwifery undergraduate diploma is awarded to students who complete all the courses (240 ECTS) in eight semesters of the "Midwifery Department Curriculum" and the following criteria. In this training, a student;

a) Counseling pregnant women, including at least 100 prenatal examinations,

b) Pregnancy follow-up and care of at least 40 pregnant women,

c) To give birth at least 40 times herself (If this number cannot be reached due to the lack of women giving birth, this number can be reduced to 30 provided that the student helps to give birth to 20 more),

ç) Active participation in breech birth (If breech birth is not possible, simulation should be done),

d) Episiotomy application and starting with suture (This includes giving theoretical knowledge and clinical practice. Suturing practice involves suturing after episiotomy or on simple perianal tears. If necessary, this can be done in the form of simulation),

e) Monitoring and caring for 40 women at risk during pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum period,

f) Monitoring and caring for at least 100 puerperium and healthy newborn babies (including examination),

g) Including premature, postmature, low birth weight or sick babies who require special care; observing and caring for the newborn baby,

h) Caring for women with gynecological and obstetric pathology,

Employment Opportunities

Our graduates can work as midwives in institutions and organizations affiliated to the Ministry of Health (Family Health Centers, Health Homes, Mother-Child Health and Reproductive Health Centers, Community Health Centers), University Hospitals and the private sector. They can also practice their profession freely. 

Transition to the Upper Degree

Students who have successfully completed their undergraduate education in this program can continue their education in graduate programs in their own field or related fields as a result of the evaluation of ALES, undergraduate graduation grade point average and interview exam together within the framework of "Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Graduate Education and Training Regulations".

Double Major/Minor/Joint Program Opportunities

This program does not include a double major/minor/joint program.

Degree Earned

Students who successfully complete this program are awarded a "Midwifery" undergraduate diploma.
